Abstraction, Clichéd Metaphors, and Vivid Generalization and Judgments

Writer: Vitto AlexanderVitto Alexander

Updated: Jan 16, 2019

2.5 - Abstraction

Compilation of Random Abstractions:

Faith present at the gates of heaven Wrapped in a soft white cloth, Escorting people with the angels of heaven

Happiness releases out in the brain Muffled by oxytocin, Fighting it’s way against cortisol

Honesty exists in each person Cloaked and ready to fly Crusading, finding trust all over the world

False hopes found being cast out to the bottom of a pit

Clothed in ripped jeans, Disfigured, it mutates into despair

2.6 - Clichéd Metaphors

Isn't it boring now?

List of Clichéd Metaphors:

1. At the end of the day

2. Happily ever after

3. Rainbow after the rain

4. Quiet before the storm

5. Frightened to death

6. A matter of time

Okay, let’s mix them up together:

1. Happy to death

2. A matter of death

3. Quiet ever after

4. Frightened ever after

5. Rainbow before the storm

6. At the end of the rainbow

Haha, not so cliché anymore(?)

2.3 - Vivid Generalizations and Judgments

Here, I am trying to replace the specific details of a well-known vivid work with generalizations and judgments (basically, adverbs) and create a new passage ...

I choose to use Henry David Thoreau's poem of "Smoke"

Henry David Thoreau

“Smoke” by Henry David Thoreau

Light-winged Smoke, Icarian bird,

Melting thy pinions in thy upward flight,

Lark without song, and messenger of dawn,

Circling above the hamlets as thy nest;

Or else, departing dream, and shadowy form

Of midnight vision, gathering up thy skirts;

By night star-veiling, and by day

Darkening the light and blotting out the sun;

Go thou my incense upward from this hearth,

And ask the gods to pardon this clear flame.

Now, let’s replace the specific details with generalizations and judgments, in other words, let’s make it bleak and painfully bad:

Bird of smokey wings, Melting thy wings as it flies, Joyfully spreading messages, Circling to plan its nest;

Or else, leaving dreams in shadows

Of night sight, slowly gathering up;

Venturing the night sky, and by day Killing the sun and glooming the day

Go thou my fragrance from this fire

And ask the gods to forgive this flame

What have I done ... it's disastrous
